چکیده

Crocodile blood extracts; serum, plasma, hemoglobin, and crude leukocyte extract were prepared from whole blood of crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis) by differential sedimentation. In this study, crocodile blood extracts possessed considerable cytotoxic activity. It was evident that, the serum, plasma, hemoglobin, and crude leukocyte extract have not significant cytotoxic potentials by the yellow tetrazolium bromide assay (MTT assay) using a macrophage-like cell, RAW 264.7. The anti-inflammatory effect of crocodile blood extracts, which were evaluated by examining their inhibitory effects on pro-inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Both plasma and crude leukocyte extract significantly inhibited the anti-inflammation NO production and exhibited cytotoxicity at the whole tested concentration. In addition, crude leukocyte extract reduced the NO production in a dose-dependent manner, also similar pattern was observed in plasma. On the other hand, serum and hemoglobin cannot inhibit the anti-inflammation NO production. Taken together, these findings indicate that the antiinflammatory properties of plasma and crude leukocyte extract may be due to the inhibition of NO production. Thus crocodile blood extracts, plasma and crude leukocyte extract may provide a potential therapeutic approach for inflammation related diseases.

High genetic diversity and demographic history of captive Siamese and Saltwater crocodiles suggest the first step toward the establishment of a breeding and reintroduction program in Thailand

The Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) and Saltwater crocodile (C. porosus) are two of the most endangered animals in Thailand. Their numbers have been reduced severely by hunting and habitat fragmentation. A reintroduction plan involving captive-bred populations that are used commercially is important and necessary as a conservation strategy to aid in the recovery of wild populations. He...

Sudden death of a Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) due to systemic aspergillosis

A 4-year-old female Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) housed at a zoo died without any prior clinical signs. During necropsy, numerous scattered, well-demarcated, yellowish-white, firm nodules were observed throughout the liver and lungs. Microscopic examination with periodic acid-Schiff staining revealed granulomatous inflammation in the liver and lungs. Liver granulomas were characteri...

Molecular evidence for genetic distinctions between Chlamydiaceae detected in Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis) and known Chlamydiaceae species.

Chlamydiosis, caused by Chlamydiaceae, is a zoonotic disease found in humans and several species of animals, including reptiles and amphibians. Although chlamydiosis in saltwater crocodiles has been previously reported in South Africa and Papua New Guinea, the reported strains have not been identified or confirmed. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to sequence and characterize Chamydiac...

Detection of antibodies to a pathogenic mycoplasma in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), broad-nosed Caimans (Caiman latirostris), and Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis).

An epidemic of pneumonia with fibrinous polyserositis and multifocal arthritis emerged in captive American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in Florida, United States, in 1995. Mycoplasma alligatoris sp. nov. was cultured from multiple organs, peripheral blood, synovial fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid of affected alligators. In a subsequent experimental inoculation study, the Henle-Koch-Ev...

Population status and conservation of Morelet's crocodile, Crocodylus moreletii, in northern Belize

Spotlight surveys were conducted from 1992 to 1997 to determine the population status of Morelet's crocodile, Crocodylus moreletii, in northern Belize. A total of 754 crocodiles were observed and 481.9 km surveyed (1.55/km). Encounter rates were highest in non-alluvial (8.20/km) and alluvial (6.11/km) lagoons, and considerably lower in most rivers and creeks (0.95/km), and coastal mangrove habi...
